THE COMPASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

We have heard it said that God is not as concerned with our comfort as He is our character. We need to adopt that kind of agape love, mothers, that shakes us out of the selfishness of wanting to be our children’s friend over being the steward of their lives. Those in this generation are crying out for boundaries and guidance; they need to know that they matter. We need to equip them not with a map we have designed ourselves, but with a compass called the leading of the Spirit that will guide them to God’s plan, no matter how many twists or turns they take. A map is a rigid plan that can become obsolete over time, but a compass will endure over time and even through change. It will always point north no matter where you go. If our children can gain a spiritual compass that always points them to God, they can find their way back to His purpose even if they get lost or take a wrong turn.

John the Baptist was created to fulfill a prophetic purpose, and it was decided before he was even conceived (Luke 1:15–17). It was determined and set in motion before he could even speak. His life was not about finding purpose, but about fulfilling purpose. God silenced the one who spoke against it and shamed those who tried to give him a family name over his true identity (Luke 1:19–20, 59–62). John had an internal compass given by God called the leading of the Spirit, and it drove him from the comfort of his home to the wilderness (Luke 1:80).

After overcoming the shame of barrenness and then those who wanted to deny her the right to name her own son, she now had the “weird” child who stood out in the crowd. We can only imagine how frustrated Elizabeth was at times, and many of us can relate to her. What must Elizabeth have thought when her child refused her home cooking and cried for locusts with wild honey. She must have lost her temper or shed a few tears when he refused to wear her beautiful handmade garments because he thought camel hair was cool and he couldn’t handle the feel of cotton (Matt. 3:4). How did she respond when John never wanted to play with the other kids in the neighborhood, but instead he desired to spend long days alone in the wilderness? From this information it is safe to say that if John had been born in this day and age, he would have been called antisocial and diagnosed with every disorder known to man, from sensory processing disorder to maybe even bipolar disorder. I am sure they would have thrown in some vitamin deficiency issue for his choice of diet. They probably would have tagged on a stress or anxiety disorder because of his daily message of repent or burn. He would have been highly medicated before he even reached kindergarten.
